Local Events With world-class sporting and cultural events happening throughout the year, there is always something to see and do in ‘The Alice’. The most famous of these is the Henley-On-Todd Regatta, where locals race bottomless boats against each in the dry river bed. Racing plays a large role in the Alice Springs social calendar. Throughout the racing season there are highlights as diverse as the bikes and cars of the Finke Desert Race, the horses of the Alice Springs Cup Carnival, or even the camels of the annual Camel Cup. Spring this year sees the coming of the 2010 Alice Springs Masters Games, with thousands of competitors from across Australia and the world competing in track, field and team events. The Alice Desert Festival is a nine day celebration of culture in all its forms, with parades, dance, music, art and food. Now in its 51st year is the Alice Springs Show. Focused on everything great about country living, this event brings the town and surrounding communities together to celebrate farming, food, arts and culture, all whilst having a good time. Alice Springs community spirit can also be seen in fundraising events such as the Bangtail Muster celebrations and parade supporting the local youth centre. Numerous formal dinners and balls are held throughout the year in aid of causes such as the Royal Flying Doctors service. | Entertainment & Culture While the population of the town may be small, Alice Springs' popularity as a tourist destination means that the dozens of the town’s cafés and restaurants support a thriving ‘café culture’ and nightlife scene. For those that are culturally minded, the town is home to numerous art galleries, with a focus on regional and indigenous art. The Araluen Arts Centre is host to both permanent and traveling exhibitions, as well as dance, music and theatre performances. The centre also screens film festivals and art house movies. There are also numerous shopping centres and complexes throughout the town, from boutique retailers, to the major chains. The town's centre is the Todd Mall, lined with trees, restaurants, cafes, galleries, and a multi-screen cinema complex. The Todd Mall also hosts open air markets every second week between February and December where local artists, craftsmen and women and food vendors of Alice Springs show off their skills. |
